The 6.12.1970 Dock Ellis story, soup to nuts

Thursday marks the 55th anniversary of my most celebrated story subject

Little Joy is the name of the bar on Sunset where I sold the Dock Ellis story to a producer from KPCC, LA NPR affiliate. I call it Little Bear in this live stream. Little Bear is a children’s show from two decades ago, and not even a good one.

Dock Ellis threw his fabled no-hitter in 1970. The tale burbled on the underground for decades. In 2008, the world learned to celebrate his feat. First came the public radio version that I made with Neille Ilel. Easily my greatest driveway moment. About a year and a half later, the animated version of my story came out and Dock got hella popular.

Dock had been dead for a year when the doc short hit. The resurrection of his memory is no good for my God complex.

In this Sojourn, I tell the whole Dock Ellis acid no-hitter yarn, from my first familiarity with the the concept through to Sarah Silverman’s live on-Fox acid advocacy and the development of of No-No: A Dockumentary. Due to pettiness, I also make time to dunk on the producers who marginalized me after their flick hit.

No Mas cut me out of this follow-up piece of shit, and it shows.

Ha ha, motherfuckers.

Anyhoo, enjoy. I’d say more, but I have a film to write and a roof to keep overhead.

Essentially, this enterprise is journalistic busking. Tipping is acceptable and even encouraged.

Stay strong, Los Angeles. We are in this together.
