The talk of politics in this free episode is minimal, but that’s not to say there’s no potency in the pod. When my guest Lance Tooks talks about his country’s lean toward fascism, it resonates because he’s calling from Madrid.
The history all around him must resonate so much in this moment.
The episode is free because I’ve been struggling with my edit program just want to get this great interview out to you in a timely manner. I’ll update the file with a version not branded by TikTok soon.
Paid subscribers, please don’t feel cheated. The podcast guests on my schedule are going to make your special support feel worthwhile.
Lance Tooks got his start at New York’s High School of Art and Design. He became an intern at Marvel 16 and an editor at 17 and has since lived a fascinating artist’s life, drawing and animating on countless projects that you’ve heard of.
Like, we only flit past his work on Madonna’s “Who’s that Girl? visuals, spending a big hunk of our conversation on Narcissa, Tooks’ graphic novel from 2004.
It’s the minutiae of our talk that makes it special. Even in the midst of a planet-wide shift toward fascist leadership, I think we show, there is still room for nuance in thinking and joy in creativity.
Newcomers should be aware that our international concern is not Trumpy-come-lately. Previously, West Coast Sojourn conversation guests have included Antonio Olmos from London; Mike Wise and Ati Sundari (separately) from Mexico; Keith Knight from Germany; and Alexandra Marshall and Dimitry Léger, from France and Martinique, respectively. There is also, of course, the Legend of Black Mexico project.
As much as I’ve enjoyed revisiting all of that talk, Madrid is resonating most, because of the looming threat.
